There are tons of articles out there that teach you exactly what to do for driving traffic to your website. However there may not be quite enough specific warnings of what you should be avoiding. Unfortunately, some of the advice that is given with good intentions may actually be bad for your traffic and search ranking. Because of this, it may be just as important to know what not to do as it is to know what to do to drive traffic to your website. This article will concentrate on the pitfalls and mistakes that may hinder your progress towards a successful, well-known and high-traffic website.

1. Do Not spam your links. If you join too many social bookmarking sites to create links to your website, it may have a negative impact on your reputation. What you may not have been told is that if you simply join these services and start creating tons of links to your own websites, articles, etc… (link spamming), you may very likely be banned from the service. Or even worse, if you really overdo it, your entire domain may get banned. Search Engines will also notice this and you will quickly get de-referenced from them.

2. Do Not let your main goal be to collect as many friends as possible. When you first join a social networking site or online community, there is sometimes the tendency to try and add as many friends as possible. Some people may post over and over in Forums and Message Boards or try to add as many members from a community or group as possible in hopes of being noticed and sending people to their website. Unfortunately these techniques simply do not work. You must be very strategic with what you choose to do, but this sort of activity will cause most community members to just see you as a spammer and some may either report or block you! The best thing to do is to truly become involved and contribute helpful advice and comments to these communities. Do not be impatient or impolite and never make personal attacks or criticisms against anyone else or their specific business venture. If you follow this advice you will gain respect and credibility and then the friends and fans will follow and very soon you will find that you will be linked-in and connected the right way and getting great traffic from the community.

3. Do Not join too many communities. It will take some time to properly participate and get involved as a contributing member of a forum, networking site or community. If you really are not interested in the community, and are really only there to promote yourself and your links, this will become obvious and people Will notice. You only have a certain amount of time so be sure to choose communities which will be interested in your website content and connected or related in some way.

4. Pay no attention to other posts which emphasize getting rich quick or driving tons of traffic to your website with no effort. If it were really that easy, everybody would be doing it and they’d all be millionaires. The most truthful, useful and respected articles are the ones that are honest and straightforward. Site promotion and driving traffic to your website takes real work, time, practice, and patience.

5. Don’t give up. When you are promoting yourself, your website and your business, you will need to be bold and determined. Don’t worry if you find some opposition of some sort. There will always be a few who will not like your work, but there will also be many who will support you. Don’t let negative people affect you and bring you down.
