Sellers’ Guide To Promoting Royal Memorabilia On EBay And Other Auction Sites
Royal memorabilia in all its many forms currently accounts for about 24,748 items on eBay UK and in the USA but there’s something crucially important I noticed only today which I want you to know right up front.
On eBay, although I found almost 25,000 items with ‘royal’ in the title, I found just 509 featuring ‘royalty’. It’s vitally important to check exactly what words bidders use to search for items similar to whatever you are selling and to use those words in your title. I’d say the fact that ‘royal’ features more prominently in titles than does ‘royalty’ could mean experienced sellers have already researched top ranking keywords for you, but you should never assume. Instead go to the eBay US Pulse Page, click on ‘Category’ choose ‘Collectibles’, next page choose ‘Royalty’ (notice how eBay favours ‘royalty’ over ‘royal’!). Here you’ll find the currently most popular keywords for products within the overall royal memorabilia category, which today are:
Signed
Crown
Diana
Wedgwood
Royal Doulton
Stamps
Coins
Coalport
Medal
Wedding.
Much the same happens on other country eBay Pulse Pages but you will have to search under individual categories in the absence of a specific royalty collecting area.
Notice no mention of ‘royal’ or ‘royalty’ among those hot keywords. We have a problem because those frequently used words don’t help us decide whether more people search for ‘royal’ or ‘royalty’ in general when searching the web, but we can rectify that (usually) by researching at major search engine Yahoo (who recently acquired Overture).
Going with the USA site, key in ‘Royalty’ and currently you’ll see the word was searched for 21,058 times in the current research month, against 22,729 for ‘royal’. Those figures are close but still we see ‘royal’ is more commonly used on eBay than ‘royalty’.
Two other things you should know about selling royal memorabilia on eBay:
* It’s obvious that most potential bidders for royal memorabilia search for keywords other than ‘royal’ or ‘royalty’ to locate items they want to buy. But considering those high frequency searches for both words on Overture / Yahoo which will also include searches for royal memorabilia in general online, you’d be better placed to include both words and a few of those Pulse Page keywords in your title and show up in virtually all searches for royal memorabilia on and outside of eBay. Where space is limited in your listings choose ‘royal’ over ‘royalty.
* Importantly, there are many items of royal memorabilia listed on eBay that don’t have ‘royal’ or ‘royalty’ in their titles, and they are fetching fabulous prices. This is because their royal and other upper crust connections may not be their most valuable aspect. The fact it is a very early photograph, for example, from the mid to late 1800s, can make an item much more valuable in its own right than for the royal it depicts.
