Using Twitter to build my list was the furthest thing from my mind when I first signed up for this service back in 2007. Considered to be the hottest new social media site, I have to admit I was among those who thought it was useless, pointless, and just plain stupid. This makes it much easier to tweet a link to a blog post or website that you want to share with others. Many people only use Twitter to promote and market their products and services, but it seems to be more acceptable if you share at least a little about your personal life. I tweet about activities I am involved in within my community, like the Rotary Club, and if I am traveling I will tweet about what is happening while I am traveling as well as when I am at the event. This makes it all more interesting.

If you are just starting out on Twitter you will want to find people you know to follow. Other people will do the same with you, so you end up with both followers and those you are following. Mike Hill has been earning a full-time, online income since 2006, but not because someone handed it to him on a silver platter. A four-year internet marketing veteran, Hill previously pursued offline direct mail opportunities and “studied” late night infomercials. This is where he cut his marketing teeth, but making good money proved elusive. The former Canadian Armed Forces soldier kept learning from countless mistakes while inching his business forward until things finally clicked.

Do as I Say, Not as I Did…

Mike created his own product right off the bat, but recommends affiliate marketing for beginners. Why? Learning affiliate marketing is a quick way for pure newbies to gain business experience. In addition, he urges folks to immediately incorporate list-building into their efforts. Hill regrets ignoring list-building himself until later, because it was only after capturing its (and e-mail marketing’s) essence that he achieved meaningful success.

To help generate recurring revenue streams, Mike recommends promoting products that can offer regular monthly income (e.g. autoresponder services, web hosting, personal development systems etc.). Differentiate yourself from other affiliate marketers by offering supplemental reports with existing products. They will add to your credibility, especially product reviews and specific information that go “outside the box”. Your transition from affiliate marketing to unique product creation – which is eventually where you want to be – will be easier.

Mike Hill reminds us to buy and test affiliate products before promoting them. Sales success is all about trust and credibility, so be fair about your evaluations even if you end up giving some products a “thumbs down”.

Blogging for the Long-Term.

Also, consider offering “dollar sales” on your Thank You page. For example, you could offer 12 expert interviews for $1. This tests the sincerity of your prospects and screens out cyber “dead weight”. You need action takers to thrive, so take note of what promotions attract them.

Contrary to many marketing heavy-hitters today, Mike questions the use of one-time offers (OTOs) on opt-ins. You have not built up the “know, like, and trust” factor yet, argues Hill, so why risk alienating new recruits at this crucial junction? Instead, put up a survey that can help mold future offers, products etc. Of course, OTOs are great with existing list subscribers, because they know you already and are familiar with your marketing style.

Domain names: Mike suggests that virtual real estate (VRE) is a growing wealth generator, with domain names moving beyond its basic website branding function. Believe it or not, some marketers pay companies to inform them about domain name availability. Keep your .com names because they are still the most credible business extensions today. Giveaways: Increasingly popular, yet Hill gives the concept mixed reviews. To fully participate and benefit, donate and/or take original products that offer great value and enhance credibility and knowledge. It must be targeted; creating giveaway-specific products is not only acceptable – it’s encouraged. Overdelivery: Everyone talks about “overdelivering” for their customers and subscribers, but what does that really mean? The best way to make people stay with you is to demonstrate that you care about them, love helping them succeed, and are humble about your own success.

If you want to sell anything successfully on eBay you need to know the ins and outs of writing a good listing that will get people buying from you. This is not that difficult once you know how. The same principles can also be applied to website sales copy, so we are killing two birds with one stone.

Firstly we want to establish our product as unique (or as unique as possible). Now could we do this with a DVD? Hardly. However with an African Mask for example though it would be relatively easy to stand out from the crowd.

Create a story to go along with your product. I find quite often when I’m buying from eBay, if it’s from a personal seller and not from a store, and the item isn’t new, I think “why are they selling it?” Make sure you answer that question.

Write a killer headline, five times as many people read the headline as the body copy. You have to grab their attention, aviod headlines which merely create curiosity, we want the visitor to read on. Don’t talk about the features of your product in your headline, talk about it’s benefits. You want to generate excitement in the reader. If you can, try and work out a way that your product could solve a problem that your reader might have. Remember, a good headline usually answers the question “what’s in it for me?”

Describe your item in detail. Don’t leave anything out. You should aim to answer every single question possible bidders may have about your product.

Create urgency in your listing.If people get the idea that they can come back and bid a few days later the chances are they won’t come back, and you will lose them. Give them a reason to take immediate action, once they have made a bid they won’t want to lose the item. If it’s a one off, or hard to come by product make sure you emphasise that fact. Rarity and/or urgency can get people bidding like crazy.

Detail your terms and conditions. This is important, leave these out of your listings and you are asking for trouble. You’ll get disputes, returns, and misunderstandings aplenty. Don’t think that people will automatically read your payment and shipping details. However if you have put them in there, together with any special conditions if you have any, you will save yourself a lot of hassle.

Do include a strong guarantee. You can say something like “If you aren’t satisfied with your purchase you can have a full, no questions asked, refund”. This will not only reassure your visitors that your product is of good quality and worth bidding for, but will also set you apart from the majority of your competitors, who do not offer such a guarantee.

Ask for the sale. It’s common sense, but you’d be surprised how many people completely miss this one. You need to ask people to take action. Tell them to place a bid today to avoid missing out, or something similar. It’s a simple thing to do, but miss this one out and you are losing potential bidders.

Writing a killer eBay listing is not difficult in itself, it can actually be an enjoyable task, especially when you think of the rewards. Most people will just shove up a product, price it, and trust to luck. By following the steps above you will be able to distinguish yourself from other listings and really stand out. EBay listings are the point of contact between you and your potential bidder. The more impact you can make on that bidder, the better off you will be. Many sellers don’t take advantage of the fact that you can use HTML coding to really create a more impressive listing. They don’t take advantage of that feature because they don’t know HTML. You can create great eBay listings even if you don’t know HTML.

There are many programs available that can be used to create web pages. Microsoft Frontpage is one of them. You can use these programs to design your listing and just cut and paste the HTML code into the text area of the listing page. What if you don’t have frontpage? Frontpage costs more than it is worth if you only do a few ads now and then. Don’t worry, there are some great no cost alternatives.

One of the best is a program called NVU. You can find it at NVU dot Com. You can download it there for free. It is a full featured WYSIWYG web page creation program. It is easy to install and it is easy to use. WYSIWYG stands for what you see is what you get. It means that however you design you listing, that is how it will look. You don’t have to know HTML to create impactful interesting pages.

If you can use a word processor like Microsoft Word or Word Perfect, then you can easily use NVU. You type your listing as you would in the text area. Then you can bold text, change color, highlight text make it larger, smaller anything you want.

You can insert graphics and you can insert pictures. The only thing you need to know is that if you want to insert pictures, you need to have them somewhere on the web. You can use any photo sharing site, or personal web space you might have on AOL or any other service.

Once you have your listing page done exactly the way you want it you are done with the hard part. NVU automatically creates the HTML code for that page. If you click on the code tab at the bottom of the NVU editor you will see the HTML code. Don’t worry, you don’t need to understand it or use it.

All you need to do with the HTML code is to cut and paste it. When you are on the code page, from the edit menu click select all. When it is all selected you select copy. You then go to the listing page on eBay and where you would type in your listing, just paste it in.

When you preview your eBay ad or when you finalize the listing it should look exactly the way you designed it in your NVU web editor. Now your auction listings on eBay will look more professional and will add more interest to get your visitors to bid.

To be successful in selling your items on eBay you need to have a listing that really sells your item to prospective buyers. Utilizing eBay’s HTML feature can allow you to create impactful, interesting, effective and converting listings the will significantly increase bidding activity on your items. The more activity the higher the bid price, the more money you make!
