Social Bookmarking is the process of letting others know that you have found something that was interesting to you and may be of interest to them as well.

Why is social bookmarking important for website owners? Social bookmarking is important for all website owners who want to improve their search page ranking because they have a special relationship with Google. Google will tend to look at sites that are socially bookmarked quicker because of the simple fact that someone found them to be of interest.

Social bookmarking can do wonders for improving search page ranking in Google and other search engines. One of the many criteria that Google uses to determine web page ranking and web page placement is the number of back links directed to your website. The more back links to a particular website the more Google sees your sit as an authority site. After all, if other sites are linking to your site it must be important.

The key is not to overuse social bookmarking.

The search engine spiders will consider all over bookmarked sites to be spam and see this as merely a means to generate traffic. Avoid this at all costs or you run the risk of be removed completely from the Google index which means your site will no longer be found when people are searching for you.

A good rule to follow is to socially bookmark your site each time you produce new content. So if you write a new article or have news that your viewers would be interested in, you should bookmark the new content with five to ten social bookmarking sites. Don’t go crazy here and use too many sites because it will cost you dearly. If you do this daily or at least a few times each week, your back links will grow rapidly and so will the authority ranking of your website.

How Much Time Does It Take For Social Bookmarking?

In the past, if you wanted to have your site socially bookmarked, you needed to ask friends, family and colleagues to read your site and socially bookmark it. As with most things related to the internet, change is inevitable and social bookmarking is no exception.

With the introduction of social bookmarking tools such as Social Marker and Only Wire (you can do a Google search for either of these tools), the task of social bookmarking has now been somewhat automated. It’s automated in the sense that you no longer need to impose on others to do this because you can do it yourself in less than ten minutes.

The neat thing about these two social bookmarking tools is that they can be easily added to the toolbar of your Firefox and Flock browsers (again you can do a Google search for either of these browsers.) Firefox and Flock are the two internet browsers used by most social internet marketers and have many advantages over other browsers. Detailed instructions on using Social Marker or Only Wire can be found on their respective websites so I will not go into the details here.

The best practice to follow for social bookmarking and building authority links to your website is to post all new content on your blog site first. The reason for this is that each new blog post is considered a new webpage. This means that when you click on the title of the blog post a new page URL is created just for that post. This is perfect for social bookmarking and SEO purposes.

Within your new blog post, you can create some good SEO content such as bolding and underling your keywords so the search engine spiders will see them better. Also remember to use your keyword as the title of the blog post and several times within the article itself.

Here is the really neat part of all blog posts. You can enter some hyper linked text at the end of each post pointing the reader to your main (or any other) website. Hyper linked text can be something like “Learn more about XYZ” where XYZ or the entire sentence can contain a link to your other website. This provides a very valuable back link for your main site which begins to build that ever important authority ranking.

The final thing that all blog posts should include is a series of the most popular social bookmarking links in the form of site logos. All major blogging software such as WordPress.org will provide this option for you.

By spending a few minutes each day on social bookmarking, you can easily and very quickly improve your websites search engine page ranking.

The social bookmarking sites such as Digg, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, furl and others allow users to indicate approval for articles that they believe are the best on the net and should be publicized. Articles or posts that get a high ranking gain many links and tons of traffic.

Software exists that allows groups of people to collaborate on voting for each others quality content. A subscriber receives a list of articles to promote and can in turn submit articles for promotion.

5) Videos

Videos are a new hot way to gain links. There are multiple sites to submit videos to and a program to automate submissions to multiple sites is a great aid.

There is software that automates signing up to video sites, social bookmarking, and social news sites. It also automates submissions of videos to the video sites, social bookmarking sites and social news sites.

There are other programs that automate submissions of videos to a number of video sites. They expedite logins to the sites. They also save common information and fill it in automatically for each selected site. They are similar to the directory and article submission programs.

Some of the programs have members areas and may require a monthly subscription.

SEO Blogging Software

There are 2 problems that all bloggers face. The main problem that they face is the need to produce quality content on a consistent basis. Creating fresh and interesting content is a challenge. Bloggers also need links to rate in the search engines.

Blogs have a special tool for generating links called trackbacks. If you comment on another blog, you send them a pingback and they can approve a link to your site called a trackback.

There are programs that search blogs for articles related to keywords that you provide. They then allow you to easily integrate these articles into your blog and they also set up trackbacks for you so that if the blog that you referred to accepts your trackback you will get a link back to your site. With the growing popularity of blogs and the ease to obtain links through comments on blogs, it didn’t take long for programmers to come up with automated tools to blast link packed spam comments to unsuspecting blogs.

Some just turn comments off for their blog but to me that eliminates one of the great features of making your blog interactive for your visitors. Comments can open discussion between the reader and the blogger. Your blog’s visitors can even subscribe to a post’s comments, getting notified of any new comments, keeping your readers coming back.

The WordPress plugin, Akismet checks comments posted on your blog posts against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not.

To activate Akismet from your WordPress blog dashboard, click Plugins, scroll down and click Activate next to the WordPress Akismet plugin. After you do that you will see a box near the top of the dashboard that reads:

Akismet is not active. You must enter your WordPress.com API key for it to work.

Click the link in the message, and then the Akismet Configuration panel will open. You should then see this in the middle of the screen:

Please enter an API key. (Get your key.)

On the top of that page click the Sign Up tab, fill in your information and if you have a self-hosted blog choose the Just a username, please option.

Instead the problem cost Lee 6 weeks of lost business – a loss which he values at $2500. This chapter is short and to the point but it teaches a vital lesson for those setting up their eBay stores – don’t cut corners and don’t miss anything out along the way.

The next chapter of Standing Start Profits is “Setting Up Your Own eBay Store”. Lee begins by outlining the benefits of an eBay store for serious sellers. He then goes on to cover in great detail with screenshots; registering with eBay, opening your eBay store and registering with Selling Manager Pro. This isn’t new information to me but for a beginner I can see how it would be useful.

After this the third chapter of Auto Auction Income covers “Managing You eBay Store”. Lee begins this section by explaining how to navigate around your ‘My eBay’ page and outlining what the various icons mean using screenshots. Next he explains (with screenshots again) how to automate various aspects of your eBay business including; the leaving of feedback, the sending of customised outgoing emails and most importantly the listing of your auctions. The information in this chapter is solid. In particular, the instructions on how to automatically list your auctions is a great time saver.

In the fourth chapter Lee covers “Customising Your eBay Store” and again illustrates all his instructions with screenshots. First, he covers the importance of having a unique shop logo, how to get one and how to get it online. After this Lee explains how to change the colours and layout of your eBay store. Following on from this Lee goes on to discuss how to set up store categories, how to set up promotion boxes, how to select your eBay store’s keywords and how to set up end of auction emails. You can discover most of the information in this chapter yourself simply by spending a few hours playing around with the various eBay store features located in ‘My eBay’. However, by reading Lee’s instructions you can save a lot of time and find out exactly what you need to do. Overall, another good, solid chapter.

Next Auto Auction Income goes on to cover “Creating Your eBay Listings”. Lee, like a lot of other sellers, recommends eBay’s Turbo Lister tool as the best way to create your eBay listings. I personally don’t use Turbo Lister – I instead create the listings using eBay’s Sell Your Item form then set them to automatically relist. Therefore, I haven’t been able to fully test this chapter. However, Lee goes into great detail explaining how to create your eBay listings in Turbo Lister and I’m sure I would have no trouble using Turbo Lister by following Lee’s instructions. My main criticism of this chapter is that Lee could have gone into a little more detail when covering the actual design of your auction. Those who are new to eBay are not likely to be familiar with designing listings in HTML and may require more information than is provided.

The final two chapters of Auto Auction Income are “Digital Delivery Using E-Junkie” and “Digital Delivery Using DLGuard” which both cover how to automatically deliver your digital products to customers after the payment has been made. E-Junkie and DLGuard are two tools that I do not use. I instead use the excellent My Digital Dispatch to automatically delivery my ebooks on eBay. However, Lee has again gone into great detail and used screenshots to explain how to use these two tools. I’m confident he has covered everything that potential users will need to know.

Overall, I really like the way Lee has presented Auto Auction Income. He has used a lot of screenshots and detailed instructions to explain the ideas and methods in his ebook. Presenting the information in this way makes it a lot easier for people that are not confident in using eBay to follow the information and ultimately set up their eBay store. Although for me the actual information is nothing new or groundbreaking – Lee’s presentation is excellent. If you are looking to set up your first eBay store and start selling digital products then there is some good information contained within Auto Auction Income. However, if you have some experience selling on eBay and have operated an eBay store for some time there may be little new information for you here.

GOOD POINTS – The detailed step-by-step instructions with screenshots are very easy to follow. You can implement them as you read. – Automating all the aspects of your eBay store, as Lee discusses in Auto Auction Income, will save you a considerable amount of time. – Auto Auction Income acts as a good checklist to make sure you have completed all the steps towards automating your eBay store.

BAD POINTS – I feel Lee could have provided a little more information covering the design of HTML listings. – People who have used eBay and eBay stores before may be familiar with some of the ideas Lee covers and find little new information.

Now that you’ve created that killer website, how are you going to get people to come visit it on the web? Unfortunately with so many websites out there, you must take an active role in promoting your site so that it will receive visitors. Fortunately there are a number of ways to do this. Some cost money, others are free. The ones that cost money will usually work faster, but the free ways work as well, if you are patient. So let’s talk about some of these traffic generation techniques.

Pay Per Click

The fastest way to drive traffic to your website is to use pay per click (PPC) advertising. Both Google and Yahoo offer programs where you can pay a certain amount each time someone clicks on an advertisement they show on their search results. PPC campaigns can drive traffic because you are paying money to have your ad shown on the first page of search results for specific keyword searches. The downside is that PPC advertising can get pretty expensive, especially if you don’t do a good job of tracking results.

Article Writing

Writing articles is a good free way of generating traffic. When you write a 500 word article, submit it to article directories. Each article will have an author bio box where you can place a link to your website. There are thousands of article directories on the web, and some article writers believe that it is a good idea to submit to as many as possible. Others believe that there are only 4 main article directories worth submitting to:

The best thing to do is to experiment and see which set of directories works best for you.

Blogging

One way to get backlinks is to create a blog on a free blogging site and put links there to your website. Google and other search engines will regularly spider your blog to index the new postings. In order for this strategy to be successful, you will need to keep your blog updated on a regular basis. Also, be sure to use relevant keywords in all your blog postings.

One good blogging platform is blogger.com. You can create your blog for free and take advantage of the wide range of layouts available. Another good platform is Wordpress.com. You can even use the WordPress software to create a blog on your very own domain name if you want, and take advantage of the many plugins that WordPress offers to do advanced things like adding social bookmarking tags or executing PHP code.

Comment on Forums

Try to find forums that are relevant to the topic of your website. Then look for posts where you can make some intelligent comments. Many forums will not allow you to post an advertisement for your website, but they will allow you to post on the forum as long as your comment is useful and not obviously an attempt to get a backlink.

Comment on Blogs

Like forums, blogs also allow you to make comments. You should especially look for blogs that have the “do follow” feature. Most blogs use “no follow” for links which means that the links have very little value for search engine optimization. But if you can find a do follow blog on your subject matter, then definitely post a comment. Just don’t post anything that is obviously spam or your comment will get deleted.

Link Building Systems

Recently there have been a few automated or semi-automated link building systems launched. These systems provide webmasters with backlinks while eliminating almost all of the hassle in getting these links. Link building systems offer many advantages and are well worth a look.
