So you’ve got the buyer in front of your auction, and they’ve read the description. They’re must be interested, or they wouldn’t be looking… but just how can you push them over that line and make them leave a bid? Read on for some tips.

Improve your picture: In all that description writing, you might have missed the vital importance of your item’s picture. A picture with bad lighting or an intrusive background looks amateurish and won’t make anyone want to buy from you.

Add an About Me page: You’ll be surprised how much you can reassure bidders just by creating an About Me page and putting a little bit about yourself on your business on there. You can also have a few special offers there for people who bother to look at the page, and let people subscribe to your mailing list so that you can email them updates.

Use SquareTrade: Signing up at SquareTrade and displaying their logo on your auctions shows that you are committed to have them resolve any disputes that arise. You always see this on PowerSellers auctions – it makes you look more professional.

Write terms and conditions: Have the ’small print’ clearly visible on all your auctions, giving details of things like shipping times and prices, your refund policy, and any other business practices you might have. This helps build confidence with buyers.

Show off your feedback: Copy and paste a selection of the feedback comments you’re most proud of to each item’s description page, instead of making bidders go and look for it. If you have 100% positive feedback, be sure to write that on every auction too.

Add NR to your titles: If you have extra space in a title, put ‘NR’ (no reserve) on the end. Bidders prefer auctions that don’t have a reserve price, and doing this lets them see that yours don’t.

Benefits not features: Make sure your description focuses on the benefits that your item can give to the customer, not just its features. This is a classic sales technique. If you have trouble with this, remember: ‘cheap’ is a feature, ’save money’ is a benefit.

List more items: If you want more people to respond to your items, then list more items! You might find you have better like listing items at the same time, instead of one-by-one. There’s no need to use a Dutch auction – you can just keep two or three auctions going at once for an item you have more than one of in stock.

Accept unusual payment methods: To reach those last few buyers, accept payment methods that many sellers don’t, like cheques.

Buy some upgrades: The best upgrade is the most expensive one, which makes your item appear first in search results. In crowded categories, you might find that this is worth the money.

Once you’ve got some buyers, you want to keep them coming back to you. The next email will show you how to turn one-time buyers into long-term customers.

1. Always look at feedback number, higher number means more confidence in a seller. You can find this number after the seller name in parentheses.

2. Look at feedback positive % as well. Seller might have large feedback number (meaning a lot of items sold on eBay), but if feedback percentage is 67% – you might step into issues with seller. A good rule of thumb is feedback percentage should be 90% or higher.

3. Buy from Power Sellers. They are well established with eBay and care about their reputation and customers.

4. If you decided to buy not from Power Seller or a seller with feedback number higher than 200, you have to check latest items sold (are they related to gold coins?) and when seller became a member of eBay. If a seller is around eBay for 2-3 months, you might just step into scam.

5. Try to find gold coin auctions with “No reserve price”. In this case you know you do not have to bid up to “reasonable” price on the coin, and actually may land a very good deal on a gold coin.

6. Look through auction listing and find Return policy. You want to make sure seller gives you 7 to 10 day to evaluate coin and decide if the coin was advertised correctly. I had few times a bad experience with coins when seller advertised coin as MS-65, where it is really MS-60.

A lot of people want to know that magical time to list their item for sale on eBay. That precise moment when their item will sell for the best possible price. What they don’t wan to hear are those dreaded two words: it depends.

My eBay selling experiences have always put me squarely in the camp of “Sunday night is the best time to list on eBay”. For me, anyway, it seems my items have always sold best with a 7-day auction that I began (and ended) at 7PM to 7:30PM PST on Sunday. The second best day and time for me has always been Monday at 7PM to 7:30PM PST. The worst day for me has been a Tuesday, any time. I never tried Fridays because I always perceived Fridays as being a bad time for an auction to end.

The truth, of course, is that it depends on quite a number of factors, and what you’re selling is a major component to what day and time is the best. For example, if you’re selling office and business products, Tuesday through Thursday during the day might be the best times. Why? Because that’s when people from businesses might be bidding for office supplies and equipment. And, I would have a tendency to exclude Monday and Fridays because some people might be taking a three-day weekend.

If you’re selling items that school-age kids might want to bid on, then the hours immediately after the school day would be good.

If you’re selling items that appeal to young adults, it’s good to take a look at the television schedule. Maybe ending an auction during an episode of “Lost” isn’t the best time. Nor would a Friday night be a good time.

Why is the beginning and ending time so important? It seems the bidding for items is most active when an item is just listed and several hours before the end of the auction. Of course, you’ll always get bidders between those times, but it does seem that the intensity of the bidding builds up in the last hour or two. Therefore, you’d want to have your auctions end when your target audience is at home and available to follow the last-minute bidding. (Which is why Sunday night has gained a reputation for being a good time to begin and end an auction — most people are home on Sunday nights.)

Of course, if you have items that are in high demand you don’t have to worry too much about not having enough bidders. Any time would be a good time to list your items. But, for the most part, you do want to make sure you have the most bidders as possible. Be sure you check for any special television programming that would take your bidders attention away from your auction. And, if you have an auction limited to a geographic area, make you don’t end an auction during a special event, like a concert in that area.

If your item is not particularly in high demand, make sure your item’s not going to end when an auction for a similar item is going to end. You want all potential bidders focused on your item, not split between yours and theirs.

As with all online selling, research is the key to a profitable outcome.

Thousands turn to ebay to daily make extra cash, sell unwanted gifts, sell other items and services or even grab a few bargains. Many know that if they’re short of cash they can turn to eBay and easily convert an item their selling into cash.

However, if your using eBay like this on a regular basis you may be qualified as a trader. Recently the Inland Revenue have issued a statement to find out if you are qualify as a trader.

If you are deliberately buying a product to sell on at profit it makes you a trader and liable to declare it. It’s that simple.

Many folks who write eBooks do so for informational marketing purposes, as it is a way to establish themselves as experts and promote their businesses online. But what if they are consultants? At some point they have to get paid for their knowledge, so others decide to sell their eBooks online and refuse to give the knowledge away.

Recently, someone had asked me to co-author an eBook which they would then sell to their customers, and I balked at first because, I would not wish to sell it is, as I would like to post it at my Online Think Tank site in the reading room and add it to my free-online eBooks, but I can also change the title and give my version away, slightly modify it, change the pictures, color back ground, etc.

While the co-author could sell it for whatever they wished. When asked what he might charge for this eBook, I thought something just under $20.00 but why? Well, I am a low-cost high-volume guy myself and there is a bit of a 1% negative growth rate currently in the US.

What’s this eBook about? It is an eBook on Blogging for Business. Now then, there are a couple of reasons to keep the price on an eBook low especially an eBook on the subject of blogging. For instance, you must remember that your eBook competes with other books and eBooks on the market. These books might be slightly better or more highly recommended by their fake blogging friends (fake because most of these people add themselves as friends, but have never actually met).

Under $20 by a hair is a good price to sell a boat load of eBooks if you choose to sell them, but if you have a specialized niche and you make the book really packed with information then you could charge a lot more, or give it away and call it an $88.00 value – “Yours for only $49.00 when you sign up for another program, offer or consulting services.”

Now then, in this case study, if this was an actual book on the shelves of Borders or Barnes and Noble you would have to compete with the “For Dingbats” series and their blog book is $21.00 “Blogging for Ding Bats” and the competing book “The Everything Blogging Book” which is $14.95 – I own both in my library, both good neither are what a Business Blogger needs necessarily.

So, if you consider this, the $20.00 or just under isn’t such bad advice, but remember these are motivated business buyers, so they WILL pay more, if they believe they need your eBook. Think on this, I hoped you have enjoyed this philosophical case study on pricing eBooks.

Your eBay reputation is everything you are on eBay – without it, you’re nothing. Your reputation is worth as much as every sale you will ever make.

If you’ve ever bought anything on eBay (and the chances are you have), then think about your own behaviour. Buying from a seller with a low feedback rating makes you feel a little nervous and insecure, while buying from a PowerSeller with their reputation in the thousands doesn’t require any thought or fear – it feels just like buying from a shop.

A Bad Reputation Will Lose You Sales.

In fact, a bad reputation will lose you almost all your sales. If someone leaves you negative feedback, you will feel the pain straight away, as that rating will go right at the top of your user page for everyone to see. Who’s going to want to do business with you when they’ve just read that you “took a month to deliver the item”, or that you had “bad communication and sent a damaged item”? The answer is no-one.

Your next few items will need to be very cheap things, just to push that negative down the page. You might have to spend days or even weeks selling cheap stuff to get enough positive feedback to make anyone deal with you again.

It’s even worse if you consistently let buyers leave negative feedback – once you get below 90% positive ratings, you might as well be invisible.

You Can’t Just Open a New Account.

Besides eBay’s rules about only having one account, there are far more downsides than that to getting a new account. You literally have to start all over again from scratch.

You won’t be able to use all the different eBay features. Your existing customers won’t be able to find you any more. Your auctions will finish at a lower price because of your low feedback rating. Opening a new account is like moving to a new town to get away from a few people who are spreading rumours about you: it’s throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

A Good Reputation Will Get You Sales.

When a PowerSeller tells me something, I tend to believe them. They can be selling a pretty unlikely item, but if they guarantee it is what they say it is, then I trust them – they’re not going to risk their reputation, after all. This is the power of a reputation: people know you want to keep it, and they know you’ll go to almost any lengths to do so.

This is true even to the point that I would sooner buy something for $20 from a seller I know I can trust than for $15 from someone with average feedback. It’s worth the extra money to feel like the seller knows what they’re doing, has all their systems in place and will get me the item quickly and efficiently.

You really will find selling on eBay so much easier, and there’s only way to get a good reputation: make sure you please your customers every time. But some customers can be, well, just a little difficult to please. In the next email, we ask: is the eBay customer always right?
