If you’re a product creator, you really should be thinking about creating products that will sell long term. Okay, what am I talking about? What’s the difference between a long term product and one with a limited shelf life? Well, in this article, we’re going to explore this issue. While nobody can really predict the shelf life of any particular product, there are some products that, by their nature, WILL outlive others.

Let me give you an example of a product with a long shelf live. A friend of mine has a company that sells informational products for health related issues. One of these products is a natural cure for acne. Now, let’s face it, if you were ever a kid, you know that this is a really annoying problem. And it’s one that all kids have. So a product like this is going to sell forever, or until somebody finds a way to make the product obsolete by coming up with something better. This would be an example of a product with a very long shelf life because the problem itself is one that has been around forever.

Okay, what would be an example of a product with a short shelf life? Well, let’s say you’re an Internet marketer and a new kind of web 2.0 site comes into existence and you write a book on how to use it to market your products. Well, at first, the book may be very popular because the site is new. But over time, the novelty of the site will wear off. For all you know, the site itself may even shut down. At that time, your book is totally useless. This might happen in a week, a month, a year or even several years, but the point is, the shelf life of a product like this is usually limited.

So, when creating products, you want to think about problems that you know are going to be around for a very long time. That’s the best way to assure yourself of creating a product that will also be around for a very long time.

If you want to sell anything successfully on eBay you need to know the ins and outs of writing a good listing that will get people buying from you. This is not that difficult once you know how. The same principles can also be applied to website sales copy, so we are killing two birds with one stone.

Firstly we want to establish our product as unique (or as unique as possible). Now could we do this with a DVD? Hardly. However with an African Mask for example though it would be relatively easy to stand out from the crowd.

Create a story to go along with your product. I find quite often when I’m buying from eBay, if it’s from a personal seller and not from a store, and the item isn’t new, I think “why are they selling it?” Make sure you answer that question.

Write a killer headline, five times as many people read the headline as the body copy. You have to grab their attention, aviod headlines which merely create curiosity, we want the visitor to read on. Don’t talk about the features of your product in your headline, talk about it’s benefits. You want to generate excitement in the reader. If you can, try and work out a way that your product could solve a problem that your reader might have. Remember, a good headline usually answers the question “what’s in it for me?”

Describe your item in detail. Don’t leave anything out. You should aim to answer every single question possible bidders may have about your product.

Create urgency in your listing.If people get the idea that they can come back and bid a few days later the chances are they won’t come back, and you will lose them. Give them a reason to take immediate action, once they have made a bid they won’t want to lose the item. If it’s a one off, or hard to come by product make sure you emphasise that fact. Rarity and/or urgency can get people bidding like crazy.

Detail your terms and conditions. This is important, leave these out of your listings and you are asking for trouble. You’ll get disputes, returns, and misunderstandings aplenty. Don’t think that people will automatically read your payment and shipping details. However if you have put them in there, together with any special conditions if you have any, you will save yourself a lot of hassle.

Do include a strong guarantee. You can say something like “If you aren’t satisfied with your purchase you can have a full, no questions asked, refund”. This will not only reassure your visitors that your product is of good quality and worth bidding for, but will also set you apart from the majority of your competitors, who do not offer such a guarantee.

Ask for the sale. It’s common sense, but you’d be surprised how many people completely miss this one. You need to ask people to take action. Tell them to place a bid today to avoid missing out, or something similar. It’s a simple thing to do, but miss this one out and you are losing potential bidders.

Writing a killer eBay listing is not difficult in itself, it can actually be an enjoyable task, especially when you think of the rewards. Most people will just shove up a product, price it, and trust to luck. By following the steps above you will be able to distinguish yourself from other listings and really stand out. How to find, fully test, and setup new Wordpress themes on your blog without anybody knowing. Don’t put it live until it’s ready!

One of the worst things about Wordpress is that when you hack your blog, or your theme, or try a new plugin or theme you’re doing it “live”. In other words – everybody sees it. So if you want to try a new theme you have to switch them live while visitor are going to your posts and pages. I hate that. I’ve heard of guys keeping a “test” version of Wordpress installed in another folder just to test new themes and hacks – and that’s not only more effort than I’m willing to do, it’s just a bit rediculous.

I have a one web site where the Wordpress theme was causing too many problems, it was old, and not worth hacking and fixing anymore. I have too many web sites and way too much to do to create a new theme from scratch. So I went theme shopping, and within 10 minutes I found one that really impressed me. You’d be amazed what you can find just googling “wordpress themes”.

Next, I downloaded the free open source Theme Test Drive Wordpress Plugin, and installed and enabled it. This plugin allows you to set a theme for your entire blog that only the administrator will see. In other words, when you are logged into your Wordpress dashboard as the admin account, you can test any post or page in your site under a theme and nobody will be the wiser. You can hack the test theme pages and nobody on your site using your normal theme will see what you are testing. Of course, if you make changes to widgets or plugins, everyone will see them on both the public and test themes. Once you enable the plugin all you have to do is go do “Presentation -> Theme Test Drive” in your WP Dashboard and enable the theme you want to test.

So in another browser window I went to my dashboard, and one by one enabled and tested 6 new Wordpress themes I had uploaded to the server. I found and settled on one that I really liked. Luckily in this web site I use theme widgets, so everything updated beautifully because I didn’t need to make any changes to the sidebar. Now, all I’m missing are any customizations I made to my current theme pages manually by adding code. So I looked at the code for my Main Index, Single Post, Archive, Comments, etc., to see what I’ve added over time to make a list.

It turns out I added quite a few things, but they’re easy to put into the new template:

Then I went through the pages in my new theme and added in the code to add these functions one by one. I tested each one as went, because with “theme test drive” installed as admin I could view any page in the site with the new theme and see these changes as I went. After I added the code and uploaded the updated theme files to my site – I tested everything one last time. Looking through the pages the only other thing that I saw was in the sidebar(s) of my new theme the category pages weren’t listed, and in my current theme they are. I did a little shuffling of the sidebars, and then I set the theme live! So instantly when I enabled the theme for the first time, people saw a fully functional ready to go blog with nothing broken! I did all the testing and updating behind the scenes on my Wordpress blog without anybody knowing it, and when I put the new theme live – voila, there is was! Now that I have this routine I’ll do this every time I update to a new Wordpress theme, and I’m so happy I no longer have to do it “live” where current visitor’s see!

Remember that old saying from when you were a kid? Well, maybe not. I don’t think that saying has been said for about 40 years now, at least not in my neighborhood. I used to hear that all the time as a kid. I didn’t always listen to the advice, like when my mom caught me with my hands all full of powdered sugar and wanted to know where I just was. That’s probably why she stopped baking LOL. Well, when it comes to Internet marketing, though not everybody practices it, honesty really IS the best policy. I’m going to explain why in this article.

Let’s take this as an example. You get an email from a prospect about your product. They want to know if it’s really going to help them do whatever they want to do. They then go into some limitations that they have such as money or skills and you realize that your product probably won’t help them. What do you do? Do you tell them the truth? Or, do you dance around the issue and give them the standard “sales pitch” response? If you do, here is what’s going to happen.

The prospect is going to purchase the product, try to use it, realize that because of the limitations that they specifically expressed to you, they can’t use it. They then write to you and request a refund. Or, worse than that, they put in a chargeback to their bank. And let me tell you, if your product is registered with Clickbank, chargebacks are a killer. They will end up raising your withholding. So in the long run, not being honest with the prospect is only going to come back to bite you on the backside.

I could go on and on and give you a ton of examples, but I think you get the point. By not being honest with your prospects, you risk ruining your reputation. When that happens, guess what? The word will get around and people who might have otherwise purchased one of your products will end up staying away from you. I have seen way too many reputations destroyed by lies.

So like mom used to say…honesty IS the best policy.

I get a lot of questions from people I’m connected to on on-line networking platforms asking what the difference is between Internet Marketing and Internet Presence. This is becoming more important as more people actually care about being found when someone does a name search in Google.

It is one thing to have content on the Internet that you are associated with such as press releases you are quoted in, blog posts you have authored or commented on, articles you’ve published on-line, web pages and websites you’ve created, and similar content others have written about you or that reference your name. It’s another thing if any of that content surfaces to the first page of Google when someone does a search – only – on your name (i.e., they don’t narrow/refine the search criteria by adding additional terms such as your employer or field of expertise etc.). Someone searching on – only – your first and last name should be able to find you on the first page of hits.

It is one thing if your name is so unique that Google only surfaces 968 hits your name. It’s another thing if you have a more common name like John Smith that surfaces 326 – million – hits. Someone with a name like John Smith has a lot more work to do to create a visible (key concept) Internet presence.

That’s where some basic Internet Marketing concepts come into play. Some people call it Search Engine Optimization, but that can have some cryptic technical connotations for those of us that don’t wear propeller hats (having a Physics degree, I used to wear one). I prefer to look at Internet Marketing in a more common sense fashion.

In the context of building a visible Internet presence, Internet Marketing is quite simply – using the Internet to market – you – or more specifically associating Internet content to your name in the eyes of a search engine.

You can have all of the content in the world floating around the Internet, but if no one can find it when they perform relevant key word searches in Google (or any search engine) none of that content is helping you create a visible (there’s that concept again) Internet presence. You can waste a lot of time creating content nobody will ever see if you don’t keep some basic Internet Marketing concepts in mind along the way.

Internet Marketing 101 – When it comes to building and establishing a visible Internet presence, it all starts with one fundamental concept: Your name – is – the key word phrase you are focusing on.

That means you want to have your name in the title of the content you create whenever possible. Ideally, that means you want it to be between the HTML title tags of the webpage that displays your content. It also helps if your name is in the first 150 characters of the content you create as well. Why? Because every search engine grabs a certain part of a document or web page to use as the descriptive text which appears below the actual hyperlinked Title of the hit. Often, but not always, a search engine grabs the first part of your content to use as the descriptive text. If you have a way of actually driving the META TAG “description” associated with the webpage displaying your content – obviously make sure your name is in the first 150 characters of that description. In addition, if you have the ability to select the META TAG “keywords” associated with the webpage displaying your content – obviously make sure your – first and last name – is one of the first 2-3 a keyword phrases you select.

Are you going through a resume writing or on-line bio writing exercise and trying to increase your visibility? Absolutely make sure you take the above basics into account if you are looking to ensure a document so obviously about – you – is going to be found when someone does a search on your name.

So what do you do if someone else is writing the article? Ask them if they would craft the article and associated HTML such that your name appears where it will be beneficial to you and not disruptive to the objective of the content.

What do you do if the content is already published on the Internet? You can create new content containing your – first and last name – hyperlinked to the associated URL of the content that mentions you by name. This is especially useful for women who go through a name change as a result of a change in marital status. Hyperlink your “current” name to content that references your “former” name. Basically you’re building a key word association with your “current” name and the associated webpage containing your “former” name in the search engines.

To accelerate your rise through the search engine noise to the first page of hits, you want to also consider where you are actually creating content. In other words, are you publishing new content on a web site you’ve created, someone else’s website, on sites that not only benefit from a lot of traffic, but also benefit from a lot of constantly changing new content, blog sites, etc.

From an article publishing perspective, EzineArticles is an obvious great example of a site that not only benefits from a lot of traffic, but also benefit from a lot of constantly changing new content.

From an on-line blogging/networking platform perspective Ecademy is an obvious example. Why Ecademy and not LinkedIn? Because LinkedIn does – not – give you the ability to post new content beyond your networking profile. LinkedIn’s lack of constantly changing new content is why your Ecademy networking profile will virtually always rank higher in Google than a corresponding profile on LinkedIn. As a result, Ecademy is a fantastic platform for creating a visible (there’s that concept again) Internet presence in comparison.

If you keep in mind some of the basic Internet Marketing concepts discussed above when you are creating new content and trying to raise the visibility of existing content, your efforts will yield a much more visible Internet presence.
