A four-year internet marketing veteran, Hill previously pursued offline direct mail opportunities and &#8220;studied&#8221; late night infomercials. This is where he cut his marketing teeth, but making good money proved elusive. The former Canadian Armed Forces soldier kept learning from countless mistakes while inching his business forward until things finally clicked.</p>

<p>To support your affiliate marketing campaigns, Hill recommends that you start a hosted blog. Apart from learning valuable skills like set-up mechanics and content generation, you can master online research tactics that lead to great search engine rankings.</p>
<p>Potential sources of blog material can be as diverse as public domain directories and your local coffee shop. Mike suggests that newbies avoid the BizOpp and &#8216;Make Money Online&#8217; niches, and instead opt for profitable market segments where your expertise can make an immediate impression and dominate.</p>
<p>While blogs are a risk-free way of gaining confidence and establishing your online presence, don&#8217;t think for a moment that riches will follow immediately. Their main function is to act as a long-term branding tool, so put your personality into it! They will help you connect with like-minded people and make friends.</p>
<p>List-Building: Don&#8217;t Forget About Your Opt-in!</p>
<p>Experts often talk about the &#8220;Opt-in Bribe&#8221;, where you offer something of value like a report or e-book in exchange for a prospect&#8217;s name and valid e-mail address. However, Mike Hill wants you to take things a step further by split testing both voluntary and non-voluntary opt-ins.</p>
<p>Also, consider offering &#8220;dollar sales&#8221; on your Thank You page. For example, you could offer 12 expert interviews for $1. This tests the sincerity of your prospects and screens out cyber &#8220;dead weight&#8221;. You need action takers to thrive, so take note of what promotions attract them.</p>
<p>Contrary to many marketing heavy-hitters today, Mike questions the use of one-time offers (OTOs) on opt-ins. You have not built up the &#8220;know, like, and trust&#8221; factor yet, argues Hill, so why risk alienating new recruits at this crucial junction? Instead, put up a survey that can help mold future offers, products etc. Of course, OTOs are great with existing list subscribers, because they know you already and are familiar with your marketing style.</p>

<p>Mike Hill opined on some online buzz phrases and topics of interest to serious and casual marketers alike:</p>
<p>Domain names: Mike suggests that virtual real estate (VRE) is a growing wealth generator, with domain names moving beyond its basic website branding function. Believe it or not, some marketers pay companies to inform them about domain name availability. Keep your .com names because they are still the most credible business extensions today. <p>Making money is a frame of mind. Decide if you want a job or if you have an entrepreneurial streak. Here are some great ways to make money if you&#8217;re under 18.</p>

<p>Work a Part-Time Job &#8211; You already knew that duh! Remember money is a mindset. Get the right part time job. Decide how many hours a day and how many days a week you are willing to work. I would say no more than 3 days a week for three reasons: school, social life and you many want your own business and well get into that later.</p>
<p>What are the right part time jobs?:</p>
<p>Librarian &#8211; In down times you can go online and educate yourself, read books or get some of your school work done.</p>
<p>Parking Lot Attendant/gas station &#8211; Again down time. Study a skill or for school.</p>
<p>Barista &#8211; Get cash everyday and it&#8217;s easier than working in a restaurant. Sometimes you get free food and coffee and it&#8217;s a great social environment.</p>
<p>Print or postal center &#8211; Only if you get a discount on products! You can use cheap or free services to promote a business which we&#8217;ll get to.</p>
<p>Do you see the connection? Not only do you get a paycheck but your incentives are time to work on your own thing and a reduced rate on products to use to your advantage.</p>
<p>Other jobs which are seasonal and for fun:</p>
<p>Camp counselor &#8211; You get to get away from your parents for the summer and GET PAID.</p>
<p>Retail &#8211; Winter only! If you need a steady job from fall to spring get in early, September or October.</p>
<p>If a job is not your thing, start a side business. The smarter you are about scheduling the more money you will make!</p>
<p>Make sure you do these jobs on your own or split larger jobs with a trustworthy friend. As a last resort work for someone else if they are fair and pay you well.</p>
<p>Turn Your Hobby Into a Business &#8211; Especially if you have special skills in the arts or computers.</p>
<p>Make custom seasonal greeting cards &#8211; either hand drawn or using photographs. Use your writing skills to come up with sentimental or funny greetings. If you have extras you can sell them year after year or give some away as a sample with ordering information inside.</p>
<p>Graphic and web design &#8211; Make banners and logos or design newsletter templates. Offer to create customized Myspace graphics for friends. Many people have small businesses and need graphics for websites and pamphlets.</p>
<p>Photography &#8211; Take pictures of your friends for their web avatars for cash. Photograph homes for real estate. Take pictures at proms, graduations or private parties.</p>
<p>Desktop publishing &#8211; Can you write or are you web savvy? Create newsletters for small businesses or if your really ambitious publish books and magazines in print or online.</p>
<p>Offer a Service &#8211; Pick one or two days a week and only offer your services those days! You can make $20 to $800 a month for just one day of work per week.</p>
<p>Simple services that you as a teen can cash in on:</p>
<p>Running errands/personal assistant/odd jobs &#8211; Busy or those with special needs could often use the help. Grocery shopping, preparing and dropping off packages to the post office, picking up kids from school, organizing, you name it. If you don&#8217;t want to stick to just one job the options of helping others vary. Seasonal: rake leaves, shovel snow, landscape, clean pools, paint etc.</p>
<p>Dog Walking Service &#8211; Start in your neighborhood and if you see someone walking their dog approach them and offer your services. Make sure you learn dog handling, training and safety.</p>
<p>House/business/window cleaning &#8211; Research how to clean properly and charge for it. Start off by cleaning your own house, your parents will love it and they may pay you if you do a good job. Start in your neighborhood and see who needs a cleaner or is unhappy with their current service. If they want to replace their cleaner this is good news to you. Charge by the job not the hour. A small one bedroom house is $50 to $75.</p>
<p>Baby sitting &#8211; Two kids, one night a week, ca-ching! If you&#8217;re a Friday night baby sitter you can charge extra. The parents will be out late and the kids will be in bed early and all you have to do is be there. Take a CPR class and know the laws in your state. </p>
<p>Tutoring/Lessons &#8211; You can either tutor younger kids or your peers with certain types of school work or you can teach special skill: music or dance, calligraphy, painting or other art, teach a foreign language. Whatever you&#8217;re good at.</p>
<p>Money On the Web &#8211; I know your excited for this and you made it this far so lets get too it!</p>
<p>Viral Marketing &#8211; You love Myspace, Facebook, Digg, all the big social networking sites and you know how to use them well. Offer your services to friends. Build a friends list or get exposure for a business or service.</p>
<p>Make videos &#8211; You don&#8217;t need a video camera!. A montage is a string of pictures, text, audio or music. Study basic copyright and creative commons laws. Some material is cheap if you give credit or a small fee to the original artist.</p>

<p>Marketing your online business does not have to be difficult. In fact, when I started online I had no background in business or marketing. I saw that many people came to the internet with an extensive background in business. Some of them had an offline business they were bringing online, or were already coaches or consultants.</p>

<p>I had none of this when I decided to jump in during 2005. My background in real estate and classroom teaching did not lend itself to starting an internet business. Instead of allowing that to stop me, I decided instead to learn from those who were successful online.</p>
<p>I read and studied every bit of information I could get my hands on. I began writing articles, blogging, and commenting on other people&#8217;s blogs. Soon I had developed a marketing plan that was getting me the results I wanted. I joined several forums and joined other people&#8217;s lists. Finally I added teleseminars to what I was doing, and things really took off.</p>
<p>After taking a look at my progress during the first year, I came to the conclusion that marketing a business on the internet was a learnable skill. I continued to learn as much as I could from others who came before me, and developed a plan of action that would work best for my niche.</p>
<p>With the arrival and acceptance of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter by the end of 2006, there was now a way to reach even more people from around the world who could be prospects for my niche topic. I jumped right in and got involved with social networking and social media, finding it to be an invaluable source of new leads and connections with people I would never have the opportunity to meet with face to face.</p>
<p>Finally, I started attending live events. This gave me a whole new way of reaching to people in order to form joint ventures and business deals. When you have that face time with people it gives the relationship more validity. Instead of just being online, I was now able to bring my information and knowledge to the world in a traditionally offline format.</p>
<p>In less than three years I have gone from knowing nothing at all about business to being able to manage my online business and earn a comfortable five figures each month. I still have a long way to go, but what I want you to know is that you can have a successful internet business in a relatively short period of time, even if you have no business experience when you first get starting building your online business.</p>

<p>Much has been written about using social media for marketing and brand building, but social media and social networking sites are also great tools for recruiting. Based on the 2008 Social Media Survey of Real Estate and Construction companies published by Morgan Sullivan, many real estate and construction executives believe that people use these tools to find jobs, but few use social media to identify and recruit top talent and that&#8217;s unfortunate because it&#8217;s effective and often inexpensive. Here are some tips on how to use social media and networking sites in recruiting:</p>

<p>LinkedIn. This is a social networking tool is popular in the professional community. Set up a LinkedIn account, grow your network to 500  primary contacts, and you&#8217;ll gain second and third party access to millions of people. Key word searches on LinkedIn can then be very effective in identifying top construction and real estate talent once your primary network is large enough. LinkedIn also has various networking groups available for construction and real estate executives to meet people who might make good employment prospects. There are other social networking sites that can provide similar benefits including Plaxo, Facebook, Twitter, and many more.</p>
<p>Blogging. Recruiting is marketing and companies that excel at marketing tend to do well when it comes to attracting and keeping top talent. Blogging is a powerful marketing tool because a blog with good information will attract people. This includes both prospective hires and clients.</p>
<p>RSS Feeds. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a great way to leverage postings on your blog. Many social media and networking sites including Twitter, Technorati, Blog Catalog, Zimbio, and many more allow you to register your RSS feed address with them to allow these sites to receive updated postings from your blog. This is an easy and inexpensive way for real estate and construction companies to communicate to social media sites and draw attention from both employment candidates and prospective clients.</p>
<p>Sign-up page. Include a sign-up page on your blog for prospective hires and clients to receive electronic communication from you. Electronic newsletters are easy to run through a blog with an RSS feed and a newsletter distribution service like Feedblitz or Feedburner. It&#8217;s also inexpensive and keeps your name in front of people you may want to hire somewhere down the road.</p>
<p>Video and Podcasting. Very few real estate and construction companies use video or podcasting according to our survey.  This is a shame because posting a video or podcast to a web site or blog is not expensive and it&#8217;s a great tool for both recruiting and marketing.</p>
<p>Although many construction and real estate companies are not using social media for recruiting or marketing, my guess is that this will change as people working in these industries become more familiar with these tools and their benefits. Recent college graduates are also much more receptive to social media than traditional forms of recruiting and marketing and the industries will have to change to survive.</p>

<p>Social media are simply tools used to leverage word of mouth marketing through the Internet. Some of the media tools include Digg which allows people to recommend articles they&#8217;ve read and share these recommendations online. Diigo and Delicious offer similar features where people can bookmark their favorite articles which are then ranked and available by topic. According to social media guru, Paul Gillin, there are more than 500 social media and social networking sites including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Plaxo, and more. As a result, knowing which sites to choose can be intimidating, but there are a number of books available that can make this process less intimidating including Secrets of Social Media Marketing, The New Rules of Marketing and PR, and The New Influencers.</p>

<p>Based on information gathered in our soon to be published survey of construction and real estate companies, many people working in these industries are not familiar with social media.   Construction and real estate companies that understand the power of pr and branding, however, should be able to grasp the potential benefits of social media in a relatively short period of time using marketing methods already familiar to them. Here&#8217;s how:</p>
<p>Encourage people to visit your web site by including social media in your conventional marketing. Most construction and real estate companies do not have blogs, but they often have web sites and electronic newsletters. Include your website address along with newsletter sign-up information in every piece of marketing you send out.   This includes postcard mailings, brochures, business cards, and even email signatures.  Do this with all of your advertising as well. Get enough people to visit your web site regularly and eventually you may not need some of these expensive forms of conventional marketing, but first get your prospective clients used to coming to your web site.</p>
<p>Add social media links to your press lists and to your web site. Links drive web site traffic and social media sites reach lots of people including journalists.</p>
<p>Provide information on your web site relevant to your clients. Many web sites are nothing more than sales pitches that drive people away. Provide a page that offers free information relevant to your clients and keep it current.  Information can include links to relevant articles and/or your newsletter. Also include a link where people can sign-up and get this information sent to them as new updates become available.</p>
<p>Research blogs relevant to your clients. Start reading them and making comments on these blogs. Blogs are web sites offering information and two-way communication between publisher and reader. <p>Start a blog. Blogging is probably the easiest way to update your web site with new information that will drive traffic to your web site and strengthen your brand. Give prospective clients information relevant to them and they will keep coming back. Prospects are also more likely to think of your company when it&#8217;s time to hire a construction or real estate company if they&#8217;ve already visited your web site previously.    Before starting the blog, it&#8217;s important to spend a month or two making comments to other blogs. In addition to getting your name out in front of your clients, making comments to other blogs provides an excellent training ground because you&#8217;ll then be able to take advantage of this experience when it&#8217;s time to create your own blog. Remember the blogs that you liked and disliked.</p>
<p>Once your blog is launched, it&#8217;ll be important to keep it current. Stale information will discourage people from visiting your site. Post your newsletter to your blog. Better yet, set up a sign-up form through Feedblitz.com and encourage readers to receive your postings in their inbox or their RSS reader. Eventually, you may even be able to replace your electronic newsletters entirely by rolling them into your blog. Social media may never replace conventional marketing, but it can certainly improve what most construction and real estate companies are currently doing to generate new business. It&#8217;s also less expensive than most traditional forms of marketing like advertising, direct mail, and even cold calling.</p>
