A lot of people want to know that magical time to list their item for sale on eBay. That precise moment when their item will sell for the best possible price. What they don’t wan to hear are those dreaded two words: it depends.

My eBay selling experiences have always put me squarely in the camp of “Sunday night is the best time to list on eBay”. For me, anyway, it seems my items have always sold best with a 7-day auction that I began (and ended) at 7PM to 7:30PM PST on Sunday. The second best day and time for me has always been Monday at 7PM to 7:30PM PST. The worst day for me has been a Tuesday, any time. I never tried Fridays because I always perceived Fridays as being a bad time for an auction to end.

The truth, of course, is that it depends on quite a number of factors, and what you’re selling is a major component to what day and time is the best. For example, if you’re selling office and business products, Tuesday through Thursday during the day might be the best times. Why? Because that’s when people from businesses might be bidding for office supplies and equipment. And, I would have a tendency to exclude Monday and Fridays because some people might be taking a three-day weekend.

If you’re selling items that school-age kids might want to bid on, then the hours immediately after the school day would be good.

If you’re selling items that appeal to young adults, it’s good to take a look at the television schedule. Maybe ending an auction during an episode of “Lost” isn’t the best time. Nor would a Friday night be a good time.

Why is the beginning and ending time so important? It seems the bidding for items is most active when an item is just listed and several hours before the end of the auction. Of course, you’ll always get bidders between those times, but it does seem that the intensity of the bidding builds up in the last hour or two. Therefore, you’d want to have your auctions end when your target audience is at home and available to follow the last-minute bidding. (Which is why Sunday night has gained a reputation for being a good time to begin and end an auction — most people are home on Sunday nights.)

Of course, if you have items that are in high demand you don’t have to worry too much about not having enough bidders. Any time would be a good time to list your items. But, for the most part, you do want to make sure you have the most bidders as possible. Be sure you check for any special television programming that would take your bidders attention away from your auction. And, if you have an auction limited to a geographic area, make you don’t end an auction during a special event, like a concert in that area.

If your item is not particularly in high demand, make sure your item’s not going to end when an auction for a similar item is going to end. You want all potential bidders focused on your item, not split between yours and theirs.

As with all online selling, research is the key to a profitable outcome.

Most people agree that one of the best sellers on eBay is craftwork items, whether they are items you’ve made yourself or they belong instead to someone else whose items you sell on commission or buy with intention to resell.

The major benefit to sellers is uniqueness – rarely are two craftwork items alike – and you often see really unusual items selling at exceptionally high prices and attracting multiple bidders.

That’s wonderful news for craftworkers but there are disadvantages to specialising this way:

* One-off creations do not lend themselves to relisting, Second Chance Offers or multiple sales on eBay.

* Few creators market themselves well on eBay, due to excessive time spent creating works of art, and too little time spent marketing and developing their products. The end result can be all work and no money.

* There’s a possibility of items not selling after days or weeks in the creation process. Another example of working long and hard and having nothing to spend.

* Greater potential problems confront bespoke item sellers who take payment before the work of creating actually begins. Many bidders see the product, bid and buy, and expect delivery right away without realising they have to wait awhile for the item to actually be made. You can resolve the problem by making it very clear that buyers must wait a specific time for their product to be created and delivered, otherwise you risk lots of unjustified negative feedback. It’s a good idea to mention waiting time way up front in your description, in the title if you can, and make waiting look like a major benefit using words and phrases like ‘Made to Your Exact Specifications’, ‘Tailor Made at the Same Price as Ordinary Widgets’, and so on.

Although listing items you do not already have or can not quickly obtain is generally against eBay’s trading rules it rarely applies to craftsman-created items or goods produced to order, like made-to-measure suits and gowns, personalised items, and similar.

I searched and found lots of items – not just craftwork creations – being made to order and selling on eBay. Most profitable appeared to be the likes of teddy bears, hand made dolls, wedding favours personalised with names of bride and groom, baby newspapers – basically a newspaper style template giving fictitious news stories and a front page picture and headline announcing a recent birth.

The whole idea of creating goods to order can be worked in much the same way as traditional dropshipping deals where you find artists and craftworkers willing to let you sell their products which they make and deliver to your customers.

There’s another great business idea here in that craftworkers’ raw materials are every bit as profitable as finished items themselves on eBay and there is a huge following of craftwork enthusiasts who purchase all the tools of their trade on eBay. Recent research suggests that craftwork is one of the fastest growing areas on eBay with a crafts-related item being sold every second, the best selling crafts being scrapbooking and cross-stitching. Research says sales of craft items on eBay have grown by 60 per cent in the past year alone.

Your eBay reputation is everything you are on eBay – without it, you’re nothing. Your reputation is worth as much as every sale you will ever make.

If you’ve ever bought anything on eBay (and the chances are you have), then think about your own behaviour. Buying from a seller with a low feedback rating makes you feel a little nervous and insecure, while buying from a PowerSeller with their reputation in the thousands doesn’t require any thought or fear – it feels just like buying from a shop.

A Bad Reputation Will Lose You Sales.

In fact, a bad reputation will lose you almost all your sales. If someone leaves you negative feedback, you will feel the pain straight away, as that rating will go right at the top of your user page for everyone to see. Who’s going to want to do business with you when they’ve just read that you “took a month to deliver the item”, or that you had “bad communication and sent a damaged item”? The answer is no-one.

Your next few items will need to be very cheap things, just to push that negative down the page. You might have to spend days or even weeks selling cheap stuff to get enough positive feedback to make anyone deal with you again.

It’s even worse if you consistently let buyers leave negative feedback – once you get below 90% positive ratings, you might as well be invisible.

You Can’t Just Open a New Account.

Besides eBay’s rules about only having one account, there are far more downsides than that to getting a new account. You literally have to start all over again from scratch.

You won’t be able to use all the different eBay features. Your existing customers won’t be able to find you any more. Your auctions will finish at a lower price because of your low feedback rating. Opening a new account is like moving to a new town to get away from a few people who are spreading rumours about you: it’s throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

A Good Reputation Will Get You Sales.

When a PowerSeller tells me something, I tend to believe them. They can be selling a pretty unlikely item, but if they guarantee it is what they say it is, then I trust them – they’re not going to risk their reputation, after all. This is the power of a reputation: people know you want to keep it, and they know you’ll go to almost any lengths to do so.

This is true even to the point that I would sooner buy something for $20 from a seller I know I can trust than for $15 from someone with average feedback. It’s worth the extra money to feel like the seller knows what they’re doing, has all their systems in place and will get me the item quickly and efficiently.

You really will find selling on eBay so much easier, and there’s only way to get a good reputation: make sure you please your customers every time. But some customers can be, well, just a little difficult to please. In the next email, we ask: is the eBay customer always right?
