The result of this is that the costs of using the big warehouse dropshipper is usually higher than the cost of goods purchased from a true wholesaler.

What this means for eBay dropshipping, is that you have to do the product research to find hard to find items that are in high demand. If you plan to sell on eBay, it’s important to make sure that the eBay selling environment isn’t too competitive. If everyone else is selling the same item, you may not be able to make a profit, and you might even lose money if your auction doesn’t sell.

Decide What To Sell

There are a few pointers to keep in mind as you decide what you’re going to sell. First, try to pick a product that’s reasonably unique, that a million other established sellers aren’t already selling. The product might be something you make, like dolls, quilts, or candles. Or it may be a collectible like antique children’s books, vinyl records, or vintage clothing. You can also sell things that people use in their every day life, like games, kitchen appliances, or fishing gear.

Second, pick a product that you’re interested in. There may be days when you get tired of your product even if you start out loving it. If you start out hating it, your business is not likely to last for long.

Third, you should have a renewable supply of your product. As old items sell, you should have a way to get new items. For instance, if you’re selling vinyl records, you might make it a point to go to every neighborhood garage sale you can find and buy up vinyl records wherever you see them. If you’re selling vintage clothing, keep an eye out for sales at the thrift store. And so on.

Research

Once you have decided what you’re going to sell, check eBay listings for similar items. Pay attention to the average starting prices and closing prices as well as to the layouts of the auctions. Set the Right Price

The lower the starting price, the more likely people will be to bid on your auctions. But be careful–if you’re selling something truly valuable, you don’t want to let it go for $1.50 when it’s worth $150. Luckily, eBay has what is called a “reserve price” feature. It is not visible to the public, but it allows you to set the absolute minimum you will accept on bids. Using the reserve price allows you to set the starting bid low, secure in the knowledge that you won’t risk losing a valuable item for next to nothing if the bidding doesn’t take off like you hope it will.

A word to the wise: only use the reserve price feature to protect a truly valuable item. Buyers tend not to like reserve prices and may steer clear of auctions that use them.

Accept Payments Online

Gone are the days when people had to mail you a check or money order. Now most eBay buyers prefer to pay quickly online using PayPal (eBay’s partner) or another online payment service. Many buyers will bypass an auction that doesn’t accept PayPal. If you’re underage, you’ll probably have to have your parents help you set up a PayPal account, but it’s well worth the aggravation.

A lot of people want to know that magical time to list their item for sale on eBay. That precise moment when their item will sell for the best possible price. What they don’t wan to hear are those dreaded two words: it depends.

My eBay selling experiences have always put me squarely in the camp of “Sunday night is the best time to list on eBay”. For me, anyway, it seems my items have always sold best with a 7-day auction that I began (and ended) at 7PM to 7:30PM PST on Sunday. The second best day and time for me has always been Monday at 7PM to 7:30PM PST. The worst day for me has been a Tuesday, any time. I never tried Fridays because I always perceived Fridays as being a bad time for an auction to end.

The truth, of course, is that it depends on quite a number of factors, and what you’re selling is a major component to what day and time is the best. For example, if you’re selling office and business products, Tuesday through Thursday during the day might be the best times. Why? Because that’s when people from businesses might be bidding for office supplies and equipment. And, I would have a tendency to exclude Monday and Fridays because some people might be taking a three-day weekend.

If you’re selling items that school-age kids might want to bid on, then the hours immediately after the school day would be good.

If you’re selling items that appeal to young adults, it’s good to take a look at the television schedule. Maybe ending an auction during an episode of “Lost” isn’t the best time. Nor would a Friday night be a good time.

Why is the beginning and ending time so important? It seems the bidding for items is most active when an item is just listed and several hours before the end of the auction. Of course, you’ll always get bidders between those times, but it does seem that the intensity of the bidding builds up in the last hour or two. Therefore, you’d want to have your auctions end when your target audience is at home and available to follow the last-minute bidding. (Which is why Sunday night has gained a reputation for being a good time to begin and end an auction — most people are home on Sunday nights.)

Of course, if you have items that are in high demand you don’t have to worry too much about not having enough bidders. Any time would be a good time to list your items. But, for the most part, you do want to make sure you have the most bidders as possible. Be sure you check for any special television programming that would take your bidders attention away from your auction. And, if you have an auction limited to a geographic area, make you don’t end an auction during a special event, like a concert in that area.

If your item is not particularly in high demand, make sure your item’s not going to end when an auction for a similar item is going to end. You want all potential bidders focused on your item, not split between yours and theirs.

As with all online selling, research is the key to a profitable outcome.

Rule #3 – The customer is ALWAYS right!

Yes, it may be hard to swallow sometimes when you have a customer sending you offensive e-mails but just smile and take it on the chin. Rectify the situation and move on. You know what it looks like, you know what it does and you know what its benefits are. Sure you will still need to give some things away for free from time to time but what is now more important than ever before is to come out from behind closed doors and get into these social arenas and communicate with this new larger group of people that once you become friends with them you will not even need to ask them to join your programs or buy your products they will do it simply because you are their friend and you are successful and they know you will share with them openly and honestly your knowledge to help them become successful as well. In the end it becomes a win, win situation for all parties involved.

When you first begin to sell on eBay, you probably will not immediately realize just how important pricing is. In fact, many new eBay sellers don’t even realize that “pricing” needs to be done at all! What happens is if you over focus on the auction process at eBay, and how to attract bidders, you can easily forget that pricing plays a very important role in the site.

When you sell an item through an eBay auction, there are really are three (and only three) prices that you need to think about:

1. The “buy it now” price.

2. The reserve price.

3. The starting bid price.

The first two of these three are in fact optional, and the starting bid price is the only one that is required in order to initiate an eBay auction.

As far as the starting bid price is concerned, the key thing to remember is that you want to attract bidders. Lots of bidders. Because the more bidders you have, the higher the final selling price is likely to be. Thus, it’s usually a good idea to set this price to a low value – $50 is a good upper limit, no matter what your item is really worth.

The most important price, especially since you have a low starting bid, is the reserve price. The reserve price is the absolute lowest price that you want to get for your item, and is your guarantee that you will never be required to sell your items at a loss. eBay does give you the option to sell the item below the reserve price, but it will never require you to do so. In fact, if the highest bid is lower than your reserve price, there are absolutely no negative consequences whatsoever from deciding not to sell item.

Furthermore, what can happen if you have no reserve price, is that scammers can use two eBay accounts in collusion to get your item for much less than the real-value: The first account bids very low, the second immediately bids high to deter other potential bidders, and then immediately before the end of the auction, the high bid is cancelled or withdrawn. However, setting a reserve price, will protect you from this particular eBay scam.

The last price to consider is the “buy it now price”. If you choose to enable this feature, visitors to your auction will see a “buy it now” option that will allow them to buy immediately, without bidding, at your chosen price. You can use this feature for any type of item, but it tends to be most useful if you are selling multiple identical items, or items that you are drop shipping.

One final thing to remember is that hipping has a price, and potential buyers will take this into consideration when they are looking at your auctions. Your item description should therefore should make clear any shipping costs associated with your item. If you become an eBay regular, you might want also experiment with offering free shipping – you could be surprised at how many extra bids this can trigger.

Of course the prerequisite to choose the right prices to sell at, is knowing what your item is worth, or, at the very least, what it cost you. For recent purchases, or items that you are drop shipping, you probably already have a very clear idea. On the other hand, for highly unique items, collectables, and high ticket items, their value may not be so clear: for these types of things, it’s probably best to seek a professional valuation before you list them on eBay.

Many folks who write eBooks do so for informational marketing purposes, as it is a way to establish themselves as experts and promote their businesses online. But what if they are consultants? At some point they have to get paid for their knowledge, so others decide to sell their eBooks online and refuse to give the knowledge away.

Recently, someone had asked me to co-author an eBook which they would then sell to their customers, and I balked at first because, I would not wish to sell it is, as I would like to post it at my Online Think Tank site in the reading room and add it to my free-online eBooks, but I can also change the title and give my version away, slightly modify it, change the pictures, color back ground, etc.

While the co-author could sell it for whatever they wished. When asked what he might charge for this eBook, I thought something just under $20.00 but why? Well, I am a low-cost high-volume guy myself and there is a bit of a 1% negative growth rate currently in the US.

What’s this eBook about? It is an eBook on Blogging for Business. Now then, there are a couple of reasons to keep the price on an eBook low especially an eBook on the subject of blogging. For instance, you must remember that your eBook competes with other books and eBooks on the market. These books might be slightly better or more highly recommended by their fake blogging friends (fake because most of these people add themselves as friends, but have never actually met).

Under $20 by a hair is a good price to sell a boat load of eBooks if you choose to sell them, but if you have a specialized niche and you make the book really packed with information then you could charge a lot more, or give it away and call it an $88.00 value – “Yours for only $49.00 when you sign up for another program, offer or consulting services.”

Now then, in this case study, if this was an actual book on the shelves of Borders or Barnes and Noble you would have to compete with the “For Dingbats” series and their blog book is $21.00 “Blogging for Ding Bats” and the competing book “The Everything Blogging Book” which is $14.95 – I own both in my library, both good neither are what a Business Blogger needs necessarily.

So, if you consider this, the $20.00 or just under isn’t such bad advice, but remember these are motivated business buyers, so they WILL pay more, if they believe they need your eBook. Think on this, I hoped you have enjoyed this philosophical case study on pricing eBooks.
